Esterházykeller – historic city cellar

The origins of the Esterházy Palace are formed by three houses, two of which are known as the Hungarian House and the power house. Through marriage and purchase, these houses passed to the Esterházy family in the 17th century. During the Turkish War, Prince Esterházy provided his soldiers for the defense of the city. It is said that due to the proximity to the city wall, the defenders were supplied with free wine from the cellars of the buildings.

The wine cellar was probably opened as a bar in 1808 and since then royal wine from Esterházy Castle in Eisenstadt has been served in the Esterházykeller. The hand-made bricks of the original vault from the 15th century still tell of legends, legends, wine bliss and customs. Inspired by the vault located two floors underground, Joseph Haydn, Kapellmeister to Prince Esterházy, also visited this wine tavern.

Viennese home cooking is served.

Note: the Esterházykeller is closed annually from July 1st to mid-September. The cellar is only open in summer for groups of 30 or more people upon request. The Stüberl above the Esterházykeller including a guest garden is also open in the summer months.
