10 restaurants in historic cellars

Ofenloch – “Bierhaus Ofenloch”

The first documented mention as the “Bierhaus Ofenloch” was in 1704, but there was already a restaurant with a Jewish food stall here in the 12th century. In old documents you can read about a Jewish bathhouse called “Zu den Rohren” in 1288 and a “Judenzeche” in 1398.

The restaurant now has 5 cozy rooms with around 85 seats and is a popular meeting place. Well-known personalities such as Leonard Bernstein, Herbert von Karajan, Oskar Werner, Helmut Qualtinger, José Carreras, Klaus Maria Brandauer and many other guests have left an entry in the company’s guest book. Friedrich Torberg dedicated the following legendary quote: “Of all the holes – of which there is no shortage in the Viennese city – the Ofenloch is by far my favorite.” It is open from Monday to Saturday or lunchtime to evening.
