Wiener Rathauskeller – historical cellars

The city had the new town hall built between 1872 and 1883. The architect Friedrich Schmidt made the arrangements for a town hall cellar, but the cellar was not opened until 1899.

This place was not only intended as a place for social gatherings, but was also intended to be used as a storage facility for Austrian wine. Therefore, large wine warehouses and wine bars were built back then.

The former “Ratskeller”, now called the Knight’s Hall, is decorated with depictions of major festivities in Vienna’s history. These frescoes date from 1898. The former “Volkskeller”, today Lanner / Lehar Saal, was rebuilt and redesigned in the dairy style in 2005 by the painter Rainer Maria Lantzke.

The Grinzinger Keller was only built after the First World War. The name comes from the huge wooden barrel decorated with carvings from the Grinzing wine tavern district. From April to October, the Austrian Dinner Show takes place in this hall with a musical and culinary journey through Austria.

The neo-baroque Ziehrer-Stüberl, now Salon Ziehrer, has rich ornamental decorations (old coats of arms) and impresses with rich carvings, silk wallpaper, gold-decorated paneling and mirrors. The à la carte restaurant is located in this room and serves classic Viennese cuisine.

The formerly named “Schwemme” room was named after “Dear Augustin” and is therefore currently served in the Augustiner-Stüberl. Seven paintings from Viennese legends and a genre painting by Karl Friedrich Gsur decorate this parlor, which is used for wine tastings.

The wall decoration in the former “Ratsstübchen”, now Ratsherrnstüberl, depicts the legends of “Scrape the trunk” and “Kiss the penny” on the walls.

The restaurant’s halls can accommodate up to 300 guests; the restaurant is open from Monday to Saturday at lunchtime and in the evening.
