To secure the city, fortifications were built around the camps as early as Roman times. The Babenbergs adapted the Roman camp walls and expanded them into a medieval city wall. In the 12th century, Duke Leopold V had what is still known today as the ditch from St. Stephen’s Cathedral to Freyung filled and the city walls built to the dimensions that served as protection until the 19th century. This project was financed from the ransom money from the capture of Richard the Lionheart.

There were very deep cellars, especially along the city walls. In order for a city wall to be stable, the foundation of the wall had to be the same depth as the wall reached above ground. The resulting cellars served as storage for food, water and vienna and ensured the survival of the city’s population. Today, historic cellars serve, among other things, as a worthwhile location for dinner.

Zwölf Apostelkeller

The Twelve Apostles Cellar is one of the oldest city wine taverns. The Hildebrandt House above was first mentioned in a document in 1339. Below there are three basements up to 18 meters deep. Around the year 1100, the lower basement was built with Romanesque stone blocks. Later, the only surviving Gothic fountain room was built. In 1721, the house was given the baroque facade that is still preserved today by the Viennese builder Lucas von Hildebrandt, which gave the building the name Hildebrandt House.

The total capacity of the premises is 390 seats. Thanks to the winding rooms, this is distributed so well that the stay remains pleasant. The 12 Papststüberl has a capacity for up to 50 people.
