Viennese coffeehouse culture
One of the first Viennese coffeehouses was founded in 1685 by an Armenian named Johannes Theodat. The then still new drink was very well received by the Viennese population, whereby the number of coffee houses rose sharply. In 1819 there were already 150 coffee houses, around 1900 even 600 coffee houses, in which also play and smoking salons were integrated.
The Viennese coffee house culture has been part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2011.
