Franz Schubert Memorial in the Stadtpark

Recognition for the great composer

In Vienna’s Stadtpark, in the first district, a memorial was set up for the world-famous composer, Franz Schubert. The idea for this came from the Vienna Male Choral Society in 1862. The sculpture of Franz Schubert was created by Wiener Carl Kundmann, who depicted him sitting with a notepad and pencil. It is one of few that portray Schubert without glasses.

Franz Schubert’s musical merits are also represented as reliefs on the memorial: on the left, instrumental music, on the right, vocal music, and on the front, the relief symbolises imagination. The memorial was ceremonially revealed in 1872. It is located in the west side of the Stadtpark, off the Ringstraße.
