Europe’s largest open-air festival, right on the waterfront of the beautiful Blue Danube – that is the Vienna Danube Island Festival, “Donauinselfest”. The cultural institution attracts thousands of people every year to the Danube Island. The festival takes place free-of-charge at the end of June, although top-class national and international stars perform on eleven stages.
When is the Danube Island Festival in Vienna?
At the end of June the time has come again! On three days, the green leisure area will be transformed into a nature-oriented festival area. Numerous small and large stages enliven the island with music, shows and other entertainment elements. A colorful program from magic to theater to fun and games is available for kids. For the little ones there is also a dance show, clown show and music by children’s songwriters.
For international visitors, international and local top acts from Austro-Pop, Rock and Dance as well as DJs, shows and competitions are presented. The frame of the popular festival offers a large-scale gastronomy offer as well as different market stalls. The Donauinselfest can be reached comfortably and environmentally friendly by public transport such as the subway or tram.
Danube Island Festival – a free festival
The Danube Island Festival is a free festival – visitors could already see STS, H-Blockx or Christina Stürmer live on stage for free. Furthermore acts like Sportfreer Stiller, Julian Le Play, Gianna Nannini, Fat Bread and various representatives of Global Hip Hop. The great location and the very varied program make the festival an annual fix point not only for Viennese and Austrians, but also for tourists and visitors.
For the tasting is ensured by a wide gastronomy offer very well. Especially beer lovers will get their money. On the one hand there is the popular “island beer” and on the other hand meanwhile also two beer gardens. A private Ottakringer island garden invites to the consumption of culinary delicacies. And if the weather cooperates – and it usually does – then there is nothing to stop you from spontaneously jumping into the cool water at one of the many natural bathing bays!
