Peterskirche – St. Peter’s Catholic Church

Liturgy & pastoral care in St. Peter’s Church

The Catholic Rectorate Church of St. Peter is considered one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Vienna. It is one of Austria’s most valuable artistic monuments. In the 4th century, Vienna’s first church stood on its site – in the Roman camp of Vindobona. Today’s St. Peter’s Church was built between 1701 and 1733. It was designed by Lukas von Hildebrandt.

With its church services, liturgy and pastoral care, it attracts not only Viennese but also guests from abroad. The church is led by Rector Dr. Christian Spalek. He is supported in his leadership and pastoral care by several priests.

History Peterskirche

The very first church on the square where today’s St. Peter’s Church stands was built in the second half of the 4th century – as a converted barracks building in the Roman camp of Vindobona: this was the oldest church and also the city’s first parish.

When this first church was rebuilt in Romanesque style and Gothicized, it became the medieval St. Peter’s Church. Stone retables from the early 16th century have been preserved from the late Gothic St. Valentine’s Chapel. They are located in today’s crypt.

The dilapidated church was demolished in 1701. The baroque St. Peter’s Church was built in its place. After its completion in 1733, it was dedicated to the Most Holy Trinity and St. Peter. Numerous great master builders of the time – such as Altomonte, Rottmayr and Donner-Kohl – created a particularly impressive church building.

The most recent renovation took place between 2001 and 2004.

The crypt: pastoral care & nativity scene exhibition during Advent

The entire church building is underlaid by the crypt. This is where the oldest part of the entire building is located – an early Romanesque stone portal lion. The room has been available for pastoral care since 1971.

Since 1958, a nativity scene exhibition has also been held here every year during Advent. This has become very well-known and popular.
