The building for the Vienna Musikverein was opened in 1870. Emperor Franz Joseph’s decision to remove the city walls made it possible to create a new part of the city along today’s Ringstrasse. In 1863, the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde was given the building site by the Emperor and used this as an opportunity to erect a magnificent building.
The Great Hall – Vienna Musikverein
This hall is often referred to as the “golden hall” and is considered one of the best concert halls in the world. It was designed by Musikverein architect Theophil Hansen and is 48.80 meters long, 19.10 meters wide and 17.75 meters high. The hall can accommodate 2,000 people, 1,700 of whom are seated and around 300 standing.
New Year’s Concert
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s annual New Year’s Concert is a world-famous event at the Vienna Musikverein. From 2006 to 2014, the annual National Day concert was also held here.
