The Lobau – recreational area and jungle

The Lobau is a large floodplain area of the Danube in the east of Vienna, which extends north of the Danube and largely within the city limits. With an area of around 22 square kilometers, it is an important part of the Donau-Auen National Park and mainly comprises forest and wetland areas on the left bank of the Danube.

The Lobau – recreational area and jungle

Historically, the Lobau served as a hunting ground for the imperial court and was declared a protected area in 1905. Today it is a valuable habitat for numerous animal and plant species, including over 800 plant species, many bird species and rare animals such as the beaver and kingfisher, the landmark of the national park.

The Lobau offers a well-signposted network of hiking and cycling trails, nature experiences and historical sites, such as the Napoleon Circular Trail, which commemorates the Battle of Aspern in 1809. It is both a recreational area and a nature reserve and is managed by the City of Vienna.

In summary, the Lobau is a green, near-natural floodplain landscape in the east of Vienna, which, as a protected area and national park, is part of one of the last large floodplain areas in Central Europe and offers a variety of leisure and nature experiences.
