The city of Vienna and Viennese sweets each have a very long history. However, it is not only the production of various sweets that is fascinating, but above all the history of the Heller brothers.

The history of confectionery in Vienna – Wiener Zuckerl
Sugar is still used as the basis for the production of Zuckerln. Until the middle of the 18th century, sugar cane was the most important resource for this. However, cane sugar was not only used for the production of sweets, but was also used primarily for the production of remedies and their consumption by patients. The use of sugar beet as a sugar resource also meant that sufficient quantities could be produced. The beet sugar factories even produced such large quantities that it became affordable for the normal population.
As a result, a rapidly growing economic sector of sugar and cake bakers developed. By the beginning of the 19th century, there were already hundreds of processing companies in Vienna, led by the sugar confectionery empire of Gustav and Wilhelm Heller. Even then, the product range included dragées, gelées, fourrés, fruit drops, cough sweets, caramels, silk sweets and rocks.
Heller’s Zuckerl in the Zuckerlwerkstatt
Many of these creations from 1898 were brought back into production by the Zuckerlwerkstatt with the support of Friedrich W. Heller – the last owner of the legendary Viennese sweet factory. As was the case back then, the small works of art are still made by hand or based on the original template.

Heller’s Viennese sweets
However, the best known are still the “Heller’s Wiener Zuckerl”, which can be bought in Austrian markets as “Englhofer Wiener Zuckerl”. The Heller company went through many changes of ownership. First it was sold to Victor Schmidt & Söhne, then to Nestlé, and in 2000 Heller was bought again by Manner. Production is now carried out by the company “Englhofer Bonbons”, which is now part of the Storck confectionery group.
Wiener Zuckerl are classic fruit sweets in six delicious flavors: apricot, lemon, raspberry, pineapple, blackcurrant and mandarin. The filling is a fruit juice. Wiener Zuckerl are still produced in Austria.
