Lainzer Tiergarten – recreation and nature reserve

The Lainzer Tiergarten is actually a nature reserve within the city of Vienna and a publicly accessible forest area with wildlife. The native game species here include roe deer, fallow deer, stags, European mouflons and wild boar.

As a protected area, it is also part of the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve – of the total area of 2,450 hectares, 2,360 hectares are located within Vienna city limits – and a Natura 2000 nature reserve. The zoo is enclosed by a perimeter wall. This is around 22 kilometers long!

Lainzer Tiergarten – recreation and nature reserve

The area is a popular excursion destination for the Viennese and is particularly suitable for outdoor exercise. It is therefore ideal for running, jogging, Nordic walking and hiking on good paths through the woodland.

Nature trails, a planet trail and a range of guided tours complete the offer in the zoo. Of course, nothing stands in the way of extensive animal watching 🙂

Please note: to protect the animals, dogs are not permitted!

Excursion destinations in the Lainzer Tiergarten

In addition to the nature reserve and the wildlife, the Hermes Villa is one of the main attractions in the Lainzer Tiergarten. The villa and its park are open all year round via the main entrance.
