This terminal railway station was built in 1858 and is the point of departure for the Westbahn train services. Until 2011, long-distance trains departed from here and even the famous Orient Express ran through Westbahnhof. Since then, the station only remains important for regional transport, as the long-distance trains now depart from other railway stations in Vienna. Mariahilfer Straße, one of the busiest shopping streets in Europe, is just a stone’s throw away.
Old meets new – Bahnhofcity shopping
The historical terminal is a protected historical building. Eight-storey-high buildings, housing offices, service companies, and a budget hotel, were erected on both sides of the terminal in 2011. In 2012 and 2013, Westbahnhof was awarded the title of “the most beautiful station in Austria”. The striking buildings have not only garnered praise but have also been referred to as “tin cans” and their close gap, as “obese” urban planning. If you want to judge it for yourself, then you will have to look at Bahnhofcity not only from the inside, but also from the outside.
Shopping on 3 Levels
The Bahnhofcity shopping mile has existed under the roof of Vienna’s since 2011. 90 shops are laid out over 3 levels on an area of 17,000 m². Here you will quickly be able to find everything you need for your trip during the main trading hours between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. from Monday to Sunday. The numerous shops offer fashion, technology, jewellery, and restaurants, making the Bahnhofcity a good alternative when a shopping trip in the city falls through, if not simply because of its easy access.
